Trump-Backed Julia Letlow Wins Louisiana Senate Runoff, Securing GOP Nomination

Rep. Julia Letlow won the Louisiana Republican Senate runoff on Saturday, defeating former State Treasurer John Fleming and securing the GOP nomination for the seat currently held by Senator Bill Cassidy. Letlow, who carried the crucial endorsement of President Donald Trump, captured approximately 57% of the vote to Fleming's 44%. The victory positions the three-term congresswoman as the overwhelming favorite in the November general election against Democratic nominee Jamie Davis in the deep-red state.[1][2]

Fleming, a founding member of the conservative House Freedom Caucus who served as a liaison for Operation Warp Speed during the first Trump administration, argued his voting record was more conservative. She was elected to the House in 2021 in a special election to fill the seat won by her husband, Luke Letlow, who died of complications from COVID-19 at age 41 just days before he was scheduled to be sworn in. During her victory speech, she credited her late husband's dedication to public service, telling the crowd, "One of the most important things he taught me is that this isn't your seat — it's the people's seat."[2][4]

Fleming conceded the race gracefully on Saturday night, telling his supporters that he loved "the heat of battle" and urging party unity heading into the general election. If elected in November, Letlow will become the first Republican woman to represent Louisiana in the U.S. Senate, and the first woman to hold a Senate seat from the state since Democrat Mary Landrieu left office in 2015.
